Jennifer Johnston

Jennifer Johnston won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Singer Award 2021, in recognition of her “commitment and emotional force…from cherished performances as artist-in-residence with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to her outstanding work supporting young musicians.”

Johnston is a former BBC New Generation Artist, and a graduate of Cambridge University and the Royal College of Music. She is particularly associated with the Bayerische Staatsoper, where her roles have included Mrs. Sedley in Peter Grimes, Brigitte in Die Todt Stadt, Second Norn in Götterdämmerung, Roßweise in Die Walküre, Floßhilde in Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung, Hedwige in Guillaume Tell and La Ciesca in Gianni Schicci. She has also appeared in opera at the Teatro alla Scala (Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw and Gaia in CO2), Salzburg Festival (Carmi in La Betulia Liberata, Lady de Hautdesert in Gawain and Leda in Die Liebe Der Danae), and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (Dido in Dido and Aeneas).

A prolific concert performer, Johnston has performed with many of the world’s greatest orchestras and conductors, and her recent engagements have included Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with Hindoyan and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler’s Second Symphony with Rouvali and the Philharmonia on BBC Radio 3, Mahler’s Third Symphony with Mäkelä and the Oslo Filharmonien, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Pintscher and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Woman: Interrupted with Malcolm Martineau at Wigmore Hall, and Verdi’s Requiem with Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the First Night of the Proms on BBC Two.

Johnston’s engagements during the 2022-23 season include Mrs. Sedley in Peter Grimes at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Juno in Semele at the Glyndebourne Festival, Mahler Symphony No. 3 with Vänskä and Minnesota Orchestra in concert and on disc, Berio’s Folksongs with Paterson and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler Symphonies No. 2 and 8 with Petrenko and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Mozart Requiem with DeBilly and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Elgar’s Sea Pictures with Slatkin and the Irish National Symphony Orchestra, Walker Mass with Chauhan and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with Madaras and the Hallé Orchestra, and recitals at the Lammermuir Festival with Malcolm Martineau and Leeds Lieder with Joseph Middleton.
